THE CBD SKINCARE TRENDS 2023

THE CBD SKINCARE TRENDS 2023

Skincare care trends are coming and going, yet the one that seems to have joined the troops and continues to thrive is that of CBD. CBD skincare was thrown into the market and trusted by consumers much more recently, yet has skyrocketed since. So much so, that the CBD skincare market is looking to grow from 964.1 million dollars in 2022 to 8.62 billion dollars by 2030. But what’s all the hype about? How could a flower that has been around for a long time – and we mean found in documents in China in 2737 BCE long time – do so much good for our skin? With where it’s been and where it's headed, let's break down the benefits of CBD in skincare and where it is going to take us in 2023.

What is CBD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive component in the cannabis plant. That means this part of the plant won’t have you giggling nonstop at the tv while your elbow deep in a box of frosted flakes, but will instead give you the medicinal properties of the plant. We, in fact, have a naturally occurring component in our bodies called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which as you can see is very similar wording. NCBI states this system is “one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells.”Showing just how impactful CBD can be for our overall well-being, including our skin.
What Are The Benefits Of CBD Skincare?
Overall, CBD shows strong connections as an anti-inflammation, anti-fungal, anti-microbial and antioxidant, and can help alleviate anxiety, aid in the suppression of pain and help overcome insomnia. All of the things which in some way can affect our skin, but to be more specific, the benefits of CBD skincare are:
Painful Acne
As one of the most common skin conditions out there, many studies have shown how CBD can aid in acne. A 2014 study found CBD could prevent and alleviate the excess of oil on our skin and therefore the clogged pores that cause acne. The next 2016 study suggests the antifungal and antibacterial properties were able to alleviate the skin infections that can come from acne. Then, lastly, the 2019 study notes that scarring from acne could be treated with CBD.
Signs of Aging
There is one aspect of aging that is caused by oxidative stress. Healthline explains this best by stating that it “is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body.”Most imbalance in our body is not seen as a good thing. So what does CBD have that can help this? Antioxidants! This, along with anti-inflammatory properties can lead to better skin.
Irritating Dryness or Itching
Some of us simply have dry skin that may cause itching, but there are many of us who struggle with eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis. A 2019 study was able to highlight how – once again – the anti-inflammatory properties can reduce not only the potential triggers but also the appearance of these types of irritations. Even those with sensitive skin can lean towards CBD skincare to support their skin health.

Unfortunate Infection
We can’t talk about all of these anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial properties and not talk about their effects on infections. Especially when we have already stated previously its benefit when it comes to acne. While it's still in the category of ‘may help,’ CBD oil has had some positive effects against bacteria on the skin. Meaning that it can only benefit as a topical treatment.
