COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS: DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK?

COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS: DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK?

Collagen is the protein that makes up around three quarters of the dry weight of human skin, helping it to remain firm, supple, and plump. It decreases with age, accelerating sagging and wrinkling. This lost protein is what hydrolysed collagen supplements (animal derived or vegan) promise to replace.

But does it really work?

Some studies show that taking collagen supplements for several months can improve skin elasticity, (i.e., wrinkles and roughness) as well as signs of aging. Others have shown that consuming collagen can increase density in bones weakened with age and can improve joint, back and knee pain.  But many of these studies are small and funded by companies that make the product, increasing the opportunity for bias in the results.

The review found some data from double-blind placebo-controlled studies to support that collagen could increase skin elasticity, collagen density and overall hydration. But a lot more evidence is needed.

Benefits of collagen supplement

#1 May improve skin health

Several studies have shown that collagen peptides or supplements containing collagen may help slow the aging of your skin by reducing wrinkles and dryness.

#2 May relieve joint pain

Collagen helps maintain the integrity of your cartilage, the rubber-like tissue that protects your joints. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements may help improve symptoms of osteoarthritis and reduce overall joint pain.

#3 May improve hair and nails

Hair and nails. Taking collagen may increase the strength of your nails by preventing brittleness. Additionally, it may help your hair and nails grow longer.

#4 Gut Health

Although no scientific evidence supports this claim, some health practitioners assert that collagen supplements can treat leaky gut syndrome, also called intestinal permeability.

#5 Weight loss

Proponents believe that collagen supplements may promote weight loss and faster metabolism. However, no studies support these claims.
